CAMPAIGN Initiatives and Goals

The School of Pharmacy is undertaking an ambitious capital campaign to address the current needs of students and faculty and lay the foundation for our future.

Capital Support
A public-private partnership will create the funding to construct a pharmacy practice building for students and faculty on the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) campus. The building will feature a technology-driven classroom, as well as multiple small group enclaves to support and enhance the problem-based learning format. Critically needed laboratory space will be provided. A comfortable student center will host informal gatherings, small-group discussions and student association meetings. Housed under one roof, students will have direct access to faculty, preceptors and leadership of the School of Pharmacy. A presence on the UMMC campus will foster true interdisciplinary collaboration in our teaching, research and patient care programs.

This structure embodies more than providing the best accommodations for our students and faculty. The additional space will allow us to address the critical shortage of trained pharmacists in Mississippi and the nation by implementing a 28% increase in enrollment for the professional pharmacy program. Our national accrediting agency found the current facilities to be inadequate and out of compliance with both the current and new accreditation standards. Indeed, our accreditation will be jeopardized if our facility needs are not met in a timely way.

Student Support
Generous scholarship support provides the incentive necessary to attract the most promising students as well as students with financial constraints. Eighty-two percent of the 2008 class graduated with student loan debt. The average debt exceeded $49,000. The Promises to Keep Campaign will secure named endowments for merit and need-based scholarships.

Faculty Support
Faculty support through a robust endowment helps attract and retain the best and brightest professors, clinicians and researchers from around the globe. Funds supporting endowed chairs, endowed professorships and distinguished teaching scholars demonstrate our faith in the abilities and vision of our faculty. The School of Pharmacy will raise necessary funding to enhance the faculty experience and ensure that quality teaching, research, and service will be available for future generations.
